WINONA LAKE – Despite a commanding advantage in shots and corner kicks, Grace College’smen's soccer team misfired on their chances in a 2-1 loss to Marian on Tuesday.
The Lancers (5-4-1; 1-2-1 Crossroads League) outshot the Knights 29-10 and took all 12 of the corner kicks in the match. But Grace struggled to score outside of an early goal from Steven Fiema.
“We didn't take the opportunities when they were given, and we are just not creating enough good options to get wins right now,” said head coach Matt Hotchkin. “We need our full roster healthy. At the same time, we need players to step up, fill gaps, take responsibility and learn how to win tight games.”
After being held scoreless in their past two games, the Lancers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard against Marian. Grace converted a corner kick from Kyle Hamlin when Fiema netted a header. Fiema's seventh goal of the season came in the second minute of play.
The Knights (8-4; 2-2 CL) responded in the 11th minute with an equalizer in the penalty box.
Grace continued to pressure throughout the first half and produced 15 shots. But the Lancers' accuracy proved to be an issue with just five shots on goal. A golden opportunity for Fiema late in the half was erased by a save from the Knights' goalkeeper.
In the second half, Marian capitalized on a defensive miscue from Grace with 28 minutes remaining to take a 2-1 lead.
Grace nearly found the tying goal with five minutes left on the scoreboard when Danilo Carnelos and Fiema combined for a one-two combination pass. But Carnelos's shot was saved. Austin Altimus and Trent Smith also had long shots in the final minutes of play that were off the mark.
“It is really discouraging, but this is life sometimes. We know we can get better results than this,” Hotchkin said. “We've got to stick together and prepare for the weekend.”
Of Grace's 29 shots, only nine were on target. The Lancers held a 15-7 advantage in shots in the first half and a 14-3 advantage in the second half.
Fiema led all players with nine shots and three shots on goal, and Altimus added four shots. Jonathan Sands, Smith and Hamlin each tried three shots.
Grace continues league play on Saturday when they travel to Bethel for a 7 p.m. kickoff.[[In-content Ad]]
