DEERFIELD, Ill. – Grace College's men's basketball team, ranked ninth in the NAIA Division II national poll,  started its 2011-12 campaign in convincing fashion with a 94-57 rout of host Trinity International Saturday.
The Lancers shot over 50 percent from the field and over 40 percent from the 3-point line as everything seemed to go Grace’s way.
“I’m very pleased with this performance for our first outing of the year,” said Grace head coach Jim Kessler. “We handled the ball well and made the smart passes. It’s a long year, but this is a good start for us.”
Jacob Peattie took scoring honors on the night with 21 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. He also nabbed four of Grace’s nine steals.
Grace started the game on a 14-3 run to set the tone for the game. Trinity International managed to battle back to tie the game at 18, but Grace stayed ahead and used a 13-3 run to end the half and enter the locker room ahead 43-31.
The Lancers opened the second half with 14 unanswered points to blow open the game, and they finished the game on a 15-3 run for the final margin of victory.
All five starters finished with double-digit scoring for Grace, led by Peattie’s 21 points.
Bruce Grimm Jr. finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and no turnovers, and Greg Miller tallied 13 points and eight boards.
Dayton Merrell had a well-rounded performance with 12 points, seven boards and six assists, and Duke Johnson chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds.
Benjamin Euler came off the bench to add five points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of play, and Tannan Peters and Dennis Williams scored six points each.
The Lancers forced the Trojans into 19 turnovers and held them to 37.9 percent from the field. Grace held a plus-20 advantage on the glass with 17 offensive rebounds helping their cause.
Grace will now prepare for its Homecoming matchup with UC Clermont Saturday at 3 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s women’s basketball team slowly but surely pulled away from Indiana University-South Bend Saturday, winning 69-53 in its home opener.
Juaneice Jackson scored a game-high 21 points off the bench as the Lady Lancers (2-0) held the Titans (0-1) to 33.3 percent shooting from the field in a solid performance.
“Our girls came out and had a great defensive mindset tonight. We handled their offense very well,” said head coach Scott Blum. “Our team defense got us going, but we had a good balance offensively as well. We showed great patience and hit the shots we needed to today.”
After giving up a layup on IUSB’s first possession, Grace proceeded to score 22 of the game’s next 32 points to open up a 10-point lead with 7:34 remaining in the half. The Titans attempted to chip away at Grace’s lead, but the Lady Lancers went into halftime ahead 35-22.
The Lady Lancers shot out of the locker room with a 12-4 run to go up by 20 points, and the lead stayed in double digits the rest of the game.
While Grace did not shoot particularly well at 37.9 percent, the Lady Lancers made up for it by outrebounding IUSB by 16, including grabbing 16 offensive rebounds. Danielle Boykin, who finished with 15 points and 12 boards, grabbed seven offensive rebounds, and Hannah Lengel added five.
Jackson’s 21 points came in 28 minutes of play. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and was 7 of 8 from the charity stripe. She also recorded three steals.
Emily Bidwell came off the bench to tally eight points, four rebounds and two blocks, and Hayley Cashier added nine boards and three assists.
Grace now prepares for its Homecoming weekend Saturday when the Lady Lancers welcome UC Clermont to the Orthopaedic Capital Center for a 1 p.m. tipoff.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
WINONA LAKE. – For 100 minutes Saturday, there was nothing to separate Grace’s women’s soccer team from Taylor University in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament.
But in the 101st minute, Elizabeth Heuss broke free and sent the Lady Lancers into the MCC semifinals with a golden goal as Grace advanced by the score of 1-0.
"I am happy to see the women rewarded today. After a way too direct first half, they came out and played futbol in the second half and OT," said head coach Michael Voss. "Today was about being patient and composed until we got our golden opportunity. We did this and were rewarded with a goal. I'm proud of their perseverance."
In a game that was a rematch from Tuesday’s 2-2 double overtime draw, the seventh-seeded Trojans (8-6-4) gave Grace everything it could handle.
Taylor was the physical aggressor in the match, as evidenced by the 18-9 foul count. And their style nearly paid off.
The Trojans took 24 shots – most of them from outside the 18 but were not able to connect on any of them.
Grace, which recorded four shots in the opening frame, only managed to take two shots after the halftime break. Fortunately for the Lady Lancers (11-6-2), one of those shots was from Heuss.
After the initial overtime period resulted in sparse goal-scoring opportunities for either squad, freshman Kaitlan Wiles jumpstarted Grace’s attack immediately in the second session with a through ball over the defending line to Heuss.
Under heavy pressure from the Trojans’ defense, Heuss shielded off a defender and flicked the ball just over the outstretched arms of Taylor goalkeeper Corri Sehr from close range and into the net for the game winner.
Heuss, who scored Grace’s two goals against Taylor Tuesday, has tallied four goals in her last three matches. Her golden goal on Saturday was her only shot attempt of the match.
Carmen Barnhill earned the shutout victory for the Lady Lancers. She made 14 saves including a handful of diving plays to secure a scoreless defensive outing.
Wiles led Grace’s offensive output with two shots, one being on frame.
Ryann Casciari played stout defense for the Lady Lancers throughout the match after battling injuries for much of the regular season. She, along with Jocelyn Evans and Kristin Yocum, each recorded one shot for Grace.
The second-seeded Lady Lancers will host Mount Vernon Nazarene Saturday at Miller Field. Grace topped the Cougars 2-1 on the road in the regular season.

MEN'S SOCCER
WINONA LAKE – Grace’s men’s soccer team recovered from a one-goal deficit to knock Goshen College out of the Mid-Central College Conference tournament with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded Lancers stayed composed after falling behind early and outplayed the fifth-seeded Maple Leafs in the second half to score the winner and hold off Goshen’s attack.
The Maple Leafs (10-8) got on the board first when Jesse Ramer found a streaking Alain Chaponniere in the penalty box for a finish from the right side in the 23rd minute.
Grace charged back late in the first half, however. Trent Smith started Grace’s goal-scoring play with a through ball to Aaron Zuercher into the left half of the penalty box. Zuercher outran his defender and poked the ball around Goshen's goalkeeper Ryan Troyer where Austin Altimus finished the slow-rolling ball from point blank range at the 39:21 mark.
The Lancers (10-6-2) nearly scored again before the half when Shane Barthuly drilled a shot off the post in the waning seconds of the first half.
Grace’s momentum continued into the second half as they outshot Goshen 13-7 in the final period.
In the 74th minute, Barthuly beat the outside defender on the right sideline and angled toward goal near the end line. He then blasted the game winner past Troyer from close range at a difficult angle for Grace’s first lead of the match.
Goshen almost tied the score a few minutes later, but Grace’s Collin Cone made a brilliant save from a 12-yard shot attempt to ensure Grace’s win.
Cone finished with three saves to take the victory.
Overall, Grace took 18 shots and seven shots on goal, led by Barthuly’s five shots (two on goal). Gift Sibukome was a major factor in Grace’s midfield possession and finished with three shots.
Goshen held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks but could only tally four shots on goal.
