By Staff Report-
Shaffer is currently serving as the 2-238th Aviation Battalion chaplain in Shelbyville and has been a Grace staff member for two and a half years.
As the Veterans Affairs professional, Shaffer will provide service to veteran and military families during the recruitment and admissions processes and will be responsible for assisting enrolled military and veteran students.
“I love serving in the United States military. I love the mission of Grace College and Seminary. My job here is the perfect marriage of both worlds,” Shaffer said.
Shaffer is assisted by two student workers who head up the Student Veteran Organization on campus.
The move to shift Shaffer’s role was part of Grace’s concerted efforts to reach out to and provide service for past and present military members and their families. As a result, Grace College was awarded the recognition of being named on the list of “Military Friendly Schools” for 2011 and 2012 by G.I. Jobs.
To assist military students in their academic pursuits, Grace College recognizes ACE-recommended credit for military training, prior college-level course work, and CLEP exams, as well as DANTES/DSST credit for some degree programs. Grace also offers a free evaluation of military training for college credit.
Grace has financial-aid programs for military members, including the Yellow Ribbon Program Scholarship, which is available to all students with 100 percent eligibility under the Post 9-11 GI Bill. This scholarship covers any remaining tuition balance after the Post 9-11 GI Bill benefit is applied to the student’s account.
The most recent physical investment in the Military Student program at Grace came in the form of the newly completed VA Student Resource Center and Lounge in the Gordon Recreation Center. The lounge, which is reserved exclusively for the use of military students, offers flat-screen TVs, leather furniture, computers with Internet access and CAC readers, and a kitchenette. The lounge has been received positively by military members and members of the SVO on campus.[[In-content Ad]]
