WINONA LAKE - Grace College is establishing an Academy of Fine Arts this fall with classes open to the public.

Tim Sanborn, a Grace professor of music, said the Academy is a way to administer what's been going on for years anyway. Private lessons are offered by most music professors.

"The Academy is intended to build up community fine arts education. It will provide more opportunities for fine arts study," Sanborn said. "There will be more classes available in a more organized manner."

This fall private instrumental, piano and voice lessons, two group art classes, Kindermusic and a children's choir are being offered. Registration fees of $35 cover music books and art supplies. "Master" classes will be held on Saturdays for group rehearsals and lessons in music theory and music history. At the end of the semester, a recital and art show are planned.

Students also will receive preferred seating at Grace Community Orchestra events. The orchestra's board of directors is overseeing the Academy's development.

Instruction for 12 lessons is available on three levels: from a professional teacher at $17 per hour, a master teacher at $12 per hour or an associate teacher for $10 per hour. A master teacher may be a Grace student or area resident who gives music instruction.

Students and/or parents may pay all fees by Aug. 29 or pay about 60 percent the day of registration and the remainder by Oct. 15. Lessons range in price from $239 to $155. There is a $10 discount if a second child is registered and a $15 discount if a third child is registered.

Sanborn's wife, Ruth, is assisting with Academy paperwork and fielding telephone calls.

"We're hoping we can raise money for scholarships eventually," she said.

Classes will last from one to two hours, depending on the subject.

Music instruction will be in Byers Music Hall on Wooster Road. Art classes will be in Jefferson Elementary School on Kings Highway, given in two six-week sessions.

Interested students may register at Byers Music Hall from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 23. A representative from Blessing Music, Fort Wayne, will have instruments and financial information available.

Information also will be sent electronically by e-mailing inquiries to [email protected]
