Grace College Advances In Volleyball League Tourney

After a first-set slipup, the Lady Lancers (26-9) got back to winning form over the final three games. The Maple Leafs (16-17) lost for the second time in seven days at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center after dropping the regular season finale to Grace on Nov. 5.
Grace will host third-seeded Taylor on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.
Ellie Harp was a dominant force in Tuesday’s quarterfinal match, producing 36 assists, 10 kills, seven digs, a solo block and four block assists.
Goshen earned the first set with a 25-21 victory. Grace led 6-2 out of the gate, but Goshen surged ahead with a 10-3 run. A timeout by Grace coach Andria Harshman helped Grace score three points in a row, but Goshen recovered with its second 10-3 run of the set to go on top 22-15. The Maple Leafs held on for the final four-point victory.
In the second set, Grace’s 16-14 lead evaporated when Goshen grabbed four consecutive points. The Maple Leafs held a 23-21 lead late in the game, but Grace turned the tide in the match. Harp and Calah Kruse swung momentum back to Grace with back-to-back kills to tie the score, and a block point from Kruse set up Sierra Smith’s set-winning kill at 25-23.
Goshen was forced to call an early timeout in the third set as Grace’s offense began to find its rhythm. The Lady Lancers blasted the Maple Leafs for 15 kills on just six errors en route to a 25-20 victory.
The fourth set proved to be the last as Grace broke open a 16-16 deadlock with three straight points, and a kill from Kaitlin Kerrigan forced Goshen into a timeout. The Lady Lancers would not be slowed, however, as Kruse ended the match with an emphatic kill at 25-21.
Kruse finished with an impressive double-double of 15 kills and 23 digs, leading Grace in both categories. Tori Bontrager ended the match with seven kills and six block assists, and Smith had five kills on 15 attempts. Grace Woolsey tallied eight kills and four block assists, Hannah Clemmons added 17 digs, and Sara Miller chipped in with 15 digs.[[In-content Ad]]
