Governor Mitch Daniels is again recognizing the important work of Indiana community foundations by proclaiming today Community Foundation Day.

The state’s community foundation infrastructure is part of a larger philanthropic sector. Together, Indiana’s 1,400 private, corporate and community foundations make a significant impact on the state’s economy, education, environment and people in need.

Every resident in each of Indiana’s 92 counties has access to a community foundation or affiliate fund in their home county – an asset no other state enjoys. In 1990, Lilly Endowment Inc. created the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow initiative to see the development of community foundations across the state. These organizations both raise funds and give funds back to the communities they represent. They provide the structure that helps people come together to plan and give wisely.

The Kosciusko County Community Foundation has assets of nearly $40 million as of its last audited financial statements. Annually, the Community Foundation awards nearly $1.7 million in seven key areas including health, human services, arts and culture, civic, recreation, environment and education.

Key projects funded by the Community Foundation of recent interest include support of Questa Foundation’s loan forgiveness program, support of dropout prevention at area public high schools, support of the Remnant Trust, support of a variety of programs that provide financial assistance to those experiencing medical difficulties and more than half a million dollars in scholarship assistance to Kosciusko County residents last year.

“The Community Foundation facilitates the charitable dreams of donors from all walks of life,” said Foundation Executive Director Suzie Light. “We process donations from lemonade stand proceeds to multi-million dollar gifts. Each donor is important and unique in their desire to make a difference.”

Since 1968, Kosciusko County Community Foundation Inc. has brought caring people and charitable endeavors together for the good of the community. The Community Foundation is a public charity, and gifts made to the Foundation are tax-deductible.
