SYRACUSE - For the Wawasee Warriors, Friday night's game against the Goshen Redskins was simply a matter of getting outrun as Goshen rang up 518 rushing yards, to beat the Warriors 49-14 in the final regular season game for both teams.

Things started off well defensively for Wawasee.

On Goshen's first drive, senior Ryan Mikel intercepted a pass from Kyle Park and ran it back 45 yards to the Goshen 21.

However, the Warrior offense was not able get the ball in the end zone, and attempted a field goal that was blocked by Goshen senior Tony Shepard.

Goshen's first score came late in the first quarter off a drive that began at its own 33-yard line. The Redskins moved the ball 48 yards before Joe Hurd ran in from 12 yards out.

The Redskins proved they would have no trouble scoring more points as they would ring up 28 points in the next quarter. The first chance came after a 34-yard interception by Jamie Egil to set up a 23-yard touchdown run by Mason Ogle on the following play.

One minute later, Goshen would score again, this time after recovering a fumble. Park set up the play with a 39-yard rush to the 28-yard line, followed by a 21-yard rush from Ogle.

He would finish the play with a 2-yard run up the gut of the Warrior defense.

Goshen's defense put a hold on the Warriors the entire second quarter, giving them good position for their next two scores.

The first was another short run, this time from Hurd, and then a 14-yard pass from Park to Phil Mikel.

Goshen came out of the halftime break just as it left off, picking up another touchdown as Park kept the ball and went in from 2 yards out. The Redskin defense held tough as it forced the Wawasee offense to go three-and-out before allowing Wawasee some movement of the ball, but not enough to score.

The Warriors finally got on the board in the fourth quarter on their first drive. After a fumble recovery on the 27-yard line Wawasee changed their offensive formation to a fullhouse backfield and finally moved the ball effectively.

Shawn Johnson would cap off the short drive with a 4-yard scamper to score.

The Redskins would answer on their next offensive series, moving the ball from their own 38-yard line before second-string quarterback Joe Gregory took it in from 5 yards out.

The most exciting play of the game for the Warriors came after the kickoff when Ryan Mikel took a pass and went 70 yards to score.

"Goshen's a very good football team and we didn't execute very well," Wawasee coach Gene Mitz said. "When you don't execute against a team as good as Goshen you get yourself in a hole that you can't get out of."

The Warriors (3-5, 2-4) will host East Noble in the first round of sectional on Friday. [[In-content Ad]]
