Goshen Golfers Tie Up Tigers

GOSHEN - When Goshen won the Northern Lakes Conference last year, the Redskins did so with the help of the best golfer in the area, Inga Snyder.
She was so good, she automatically made Goshen better than teams in most matches.
But Snyder can't help Goshen this year. She plays golf for Indiana University now.
The Redskins hosted Warsaw at Maplecrest Country Club in a Tuesday match. The match pitted 12-1 Goshen against 10-1 Warsaw. Both owned undefeated records in the Northern Lakes Conference. The winner would take control in the race for the NLC title.
Turns out Goshen didn't need Snyder. The 48 by Goshen's fourth golfer, Megan Thomas, was better than any of Warsaw's scores. The Redskins ambushed Warsaw 183-207.
Struggling at Maplecrest against Goshen is nothing new to Warsaw coach Bob Turner.
"Traditionally, we never do well on this course, and that includes the boys teams, too," he said. "In golf, the advantage usually goes to the team playing on their home course. At Rozella Ford (Warsaw's home course), I almost guarantee we're 10 strokes better, and they're 10 strokes worse."
Goshen's 1997 lineup without Snyder? Four sophomores and a freshman. The top four in the lineup are sophomores.
Goshen No. 1 golfer Erin Sample parred four holes to shoot a 44 on the par-36 course. Lisa Sample, Goshen's No. 2 golfer, parred three holes to shoot a 47. Julie Riley parred three holes to shoot a 44 out of the No. 3 slot. Thomas didn't par any holes, but her 48 still helped the Redskins.
Ashley Cooper, golfing in the No. 2 spot, led Warsaw with a 49. April Turner shot a 52 out of the No. 3 spot, the same score as No. 1 golfer Brooke Westover. Kerri Wrobel shot a 54 in the fourth slot.
Warsaw shot a 188 at Rozella on Aug. 21 to cruise to an easy win. The Tigers looked good that day, shooting their best score to date.
Even then, Turner predicted a tough time or two ahead. Was he thinking of the match with Goshen?
Probably.
"We had a couple golfers play well, and we had some who didn't play to their potential," Turner said. "Like I said a few weeks back, there's always one out there that will bite you.
"This was the one."
The Tigers get what every team always hopes for after a loss: another shot at the team that beat them. The Tigers and Goshen and the rest of the teams in the NLC will meet in the NLC Championship on Sept. 13.
Goshen will lose the home course advantage. The match will be played at Black Squirrel Golf Course.
Turner is already eyeing that match.
"We got beat by a better team tonight," he said. "To have a chance to win conference, we will have to win the NLC tournament. They have their foot in the door.
"We shot a 207, and that would beat most of the teams we've played so far. It's not like we fell apart.
"We're 10-2, the season's not over. The match we played tonight, it's over."
Warsaw, 4-1 in the NLC, hosts Wawasee in a 4:30 p.m. Thursday match at Rozella Ford. The match is Warsaw's last against an NLC team before the NLC Championship.
Goshen is 4-0 in the NLC. The Redskins still have two NLC matches left before the NLC Championship, but barring a catastrophe, they figure to win both. [[In-content Ad]]
