Goshen Golf Team Owns NLC
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
MIDDLEBURY - After his team defeated Manchester last Thursday, Warsaw coach Bob Turner was talking about Saturday's Northern Lakes Conference tournament, and he said he knew very well that Goshen could run away from the rest of the field at Spring Meadow. As for his team, he said, he just wanted them to relax and enjoy themselves.
His assumption of the Redskins was more than accurate. Goshen won the NLC tournament Saturday with a score of 340. The Tigers finished second with a 397.
Over the past four years Goshen has gone 24-0 in NLC round-robin play and won the conference tournament in each of those years. Goshen's score of 340 Saturday is a new conference record, breaking the one it set last year at 346.
"We were real-low key going in," said Turner. "I just told the girls to enjoy themselves. We had a seven stroke lead over Plymouth at the turn and Lara Reed shot her best score since August. It was the end of a long week and we tied for second in the conference with Plymouth."
Reed led the Tigers with a 95 and was followed by Tosha Nance (99), April Turner (101), Kerri Wrobel (102) and Jaci Thallemer (117). Goshen's Erin Sample took medalist honors after shooting an 82. Goshen's highest score, a 93 by Jaime Sarbaugh, was two strokes better than anyone on the opposing six teams.
Wawasee was led by Ashley Bell's 110 and was followed by Aimee Niles (117), Rebecca Stoelting (118), Ashley Ward (119) and Carrie Alles 123.
"At this point in the season we're just happy that we're going to have everyone back next year," said Wawasee coach Scott DeHart. "We have a freshmen, three sophomores and a junior in our lineup and I'm very pleased and proud of the way we played. No. 1 we gained valuable experience and No. 2 we know this group will have to work on its game to be competitive. This group of kids will work hard; they just lack experience. Of the five girls on the course, two had varsity experience before this year. The other three had never been in a varsity lineup -Êin fact they didn't even play."
Goshen put five girls on the All Northern Lakes Conference team. Wrobel, Northridge's Stephanie Berry and NorthWood's Jill VanBruaene were also named to the list.
VanBruaene led the Panthers Saturday with a 108.
Wawasee will host Columbia City and Goshen Tuesday at Maxwelton. Warsaw will host Culver Girls Academy Tuesday at Rozella Ford.
