ELKHART -ÊThe Warsaw Tigers ended their season Saturday after falling to Goshen 7-4 in the championship game of the Elkhart Memorial Sectional.

After sending three up and three down in the top of the first, Warsaw took the field against Goshen. The first three Redskin batters got hits, and after scoring one run, Goshen had runners at first and second with no outs.

Warsaw's Jon Walmer turned a double play to eliminate two Goshen runners and cleanly fielded a ground ball from the next batter to end the inning.

Warsaw then capitalized on Goshen errors in the second to take over the lead. Joe Stanley and Zach Nelson walked to give the Tigers runners on first and second with two outs. Then Don Kennedy stepped to the plate and hit a single, and an error by the right fielder allowed Stanley cross the plate for the first Warsaw run.

Jeff Sherman hit a single that drove in Nelson for the second Warsaw run, and Kennedy scored on a throwing error by the Goshen pitcher. By the end of the inning, Warsaw scored three runs on two hits and two Redskin errors.

However, the Tiger lead would only last for one inning as Goshen took advantage of two Warsaw errors in the third inning to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead. But the Redskins did not stop there. Goshen scored three runs on two more Warsaw errors in the fourth inning to build a 7-3 advantage over the Tigers.

Warsaw scored one more run in the fifth inning after Pat Riley led off the inning with a double. Riley moved to third on a single by Jason Barrett and later scored on a fielder's choice by Steve Siebenmorgen.

That would be the only run Warsaw would score after the second inning, and Goshen came out on top 7-4 to advance to the Warsaw Regional this weekend.

"We did not deserve to win this game," said Warsaw coach Will Shepherd. "Defensively, we hesitated all day. With this competition, you hesitate, you go home, and that's where we're going.

"We made some really bonehead plays out there, and you can't do that at sectional time. We played hard, but we did not play well.

"Goshen made a lot of defensive plays, and they deserve to go on. They just played tougher than us today."

Goshen will move on to play at the Warsaw Regional Saturday against Fort Wayne Northrop. Northrop defeated Fort Wayne Snider 6-3 in the Snider Sectional to advance to the regional.
