GOSHEN - The Goshen College men's basketball team shot 60 percent from the field and 55 percent from the three-point line, defeating Grace College 88-83 Tuesday in a game featuring a number of large momentum swings.
Grace continued to struggle out of the gate, a trend that is becoming a regular event for the Lancers. Goshen built a 32-19 lead but Grace closed the half on a 13-2 run and trailed just 34-32 at the break.
The Lancers continued to build on that momentum, scoring 30 points in the first eight minutes of the second half and building a 63-52 lead. But Goshen answered back with an eight point run that turned the momentum back to the Maple Leafs.
Goshen finally took the lead with six minutes to play and then the Maple Leafs' Tyler Sheerer hit a big three-pointer on the next possession to give his team a 73-68 advantage. Goshen made two more big three-pointers down the stretch and connected on its free-throws to finish with the 88-83 win as Grace never got closer than four points the rest of the way.
Marcus Moore finished with 23 points, making 9-of-10 free-throws, while Andrew Kipsey ended with 15, all in the second half. Joe Saunders added 13 and Dave Richmond had 12. Kevin Stuckmeyer made a number of big shots in the first half to keep the Lancers close and ended with nine points, while Scott Moore had seven points, seven assists and four steals in his first career start for the Lancers.
Grace shot 47 percent from the field and made 17-of-21 free-throws, but was outrebounded 31-19 on the night. Grace did commit just six turnovers but Goshen's 11-of-20 three-point night was too much for the Lancers to battle back from.
Goshen improves to 15-7 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-Central Conference, while Grace falls to 13-7 and 3-5 in the MCC. The Lancers will host rival Bethel Saturday at 3 p.m. as the athletic department recognizes head coach Jim Kessler on his 500 career victories. [[In-content Ad]]
