Monday afternoon, Gordy’s owner Karol Clemens met with brothers Chuck and Mike Simpson at what is now Pickerman’s, North Detroit Street, Warsaw, to talk about the re-launch of the restaurant lost to fire in June 2008.
The new eatery will open April 1.
The restaurant opened in 1990 at the corner of Buffalo Street and Winona Avenue in Warsaw.
Clemens took over the business in 2001.
Employing more than 20 people, Clemens said the staff became family and that made the fire that much more difficult.
Now, after nearly four years, Clemens and the Simpson brothers have decided to use the current Pickerman’s location as the re-launch of what was formerly known as Gordy’s.
The restaurant will open under a new name, one Clemens said she is still working on.
Pickerman’s last day open is Feb. 17.
“We just want to thank our employees and our customers for supporting Pickerman’s and making it a great place,” said Chuck Simpson.
Clemens said it was with mixed emotions that Pickerman’s was closing as her new venture was re-opening.
Employees of Pickerman’s who choose to can interview for positions at the new restaurant.
The staff will once again be about 20 to 25 people for Clemens.
Some of her old employees are able to return, which has Clemens excited.
“I’m excited to get our staff back together, and most importantly I’m excited to see our customers again.”
Clemens said the 2,000 square-foot location is ideal with the traffic flow heading along North Detroit Street/Ind. 15.
“It’s a bright, sunny location that I feel will be very welcoming to people,” said Clemens.
Despite the name and location change, the menu will still offer what Gordy’s offered with a few additions.
Clemens had been looking for locations for a new restaurant for some time. Some didn’t pan out, then health problems caused the venture to be delayed.
Now Clemens and her staff are ready to bring back what many Warsawans have been waiting nearly four years for.
“Every time I see our old customers they ask me, ‘When are you guys opening back up again,’” said former Gordy’s manager Michelle Klosowski.
Klosowski said she was excited to get everyone who worked at Gordy’s back together.
“We really are like family,” said Klosowski.
“We can’t express how happy we are to be back together again and to be able to see our customers again,” added Clemens.
The new restaurant will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The restaurant will be getting new signage and equipment before its April 1 opening.
