SYRACUSE -ÊRepublicans gathered in the Syracuse town hall Tuesday to choose their candidate for Ward 3 town councilman.
By a majority vote, the 71 convention members chose 12-year incumbent Carol Koble over first-time candidate Byron Oswald.
Candidates were given five minutes apiece to speak. Koble said if re-elected, she wants to continue the industrial park development; see the completion of the Ind. 13 project; have tree stumps in the town removed and new trees replanted; have ordinances written and implemented that will remove abandoned property in the residential area; continue cooperation with the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce; and see the development of the community center on the donated land with minimal cost to taxpayers.
Koble was a teacher at Syracuse Elementary for 26 years and at North Webster Elementary for one year. She retired last year.
Oswald told the convention he is a newcomer to the political scene but an area resident for 24 years. An employee of Wawasee schools, he said he finally felt secure enough in the community to run for political office. He said he wants to make a difference.
Political parties in towns with populations of 3,500 or less must hold a convention when two of their members run for the same position. In Syracuse, Koble and Oswald were the only two Republicans competing for the same position. Barbara Carwile, ward 4, and Bill Hane, ward 5, are running for their council positions unopposed within their party. Republican Margaret Tallon will run against current clerk-treasurer and Democrat Elgie Tatman in November.
To be eligible to vote at Tuesday's convention, participants had to be registered voters and Republican. No nominations were allowed from the floor at the convention and only people who filed for candidacy were considered candidates. [[In-content Ad]]
