Goodman Trio To Appear Saturday At Rodeheaver
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Benny Goodman's clarinet helped define a whole style of music in the 1930s - swing.
His recordings of popular songs and dance music still captivate today.
"Swingin' the Benny Goodman Songbook," featuring clarinetist Allan Vache«, pianist Mark Shane and jazz vocalist Terry Blaine is the Lakeland Community Concert Association's first concert in 2006, the third of the 2005-2006 season.
The concert is in Rodeheaver Auditorium, Winona Lake, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Vache«, an acclaimed clarinetist who needs no introduction among swing fans, handles the role of Benny Goodman with aplomb. His latest album as bandleader, "Ballads, Burners and Blues," was picked as one of last year's best recordings on O's Place, a prominent jazz Web site. His clarinet has enabled him to secure feature solo spots at jazz festivals worldwide. Pianist Mark Shane, the Teddy Wilson figure of this trio, actually sat in with Goodman and was invited to play at the 50th anniversary Benny Goodman Memorial Concert at Carnegie Hall. Shane's solo piano CD "Riffles" was selected as one of Jazz Journal International's records of the year in 2003.
As vocalist, Blaine pays tribute to the many women who sang with the Goodman band, illuminating the work of Goodman singers like Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Helen Forrest and Ella Fitzgerald. She has gained international attention and recognition as one of today's finest interpreters of classic jazz and swing standards from the 1930s. A favorite in concert and on radio, Blaine's CD "Whose Honey Are You" was a Jazz Journal Record of the Year.
LCCA subscriptions are $35 for the season. Individual concert tickets are $15 each.
Children, 18-years-old and younger or still in high school, may attend free when accompanied by an adult member.
Van Cliburn Competition Medalist Chu-Fang Huang will appear March 19 at 2 p.m. and the Montana Mandolin Society plays April 15 at 7:30 p.m.
LCCA subscription cards are honored at community concerts in four other towns: Kendallville, LaPorte, Auburn and Kokomo. Reciprocal schedules are available.
For more information about LCCA, call June Staley, 269-7336, or Phil Eherenman, 267-3992. [[In-content Ad]]
