He was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Rushville, to John and Ethel Piles Borders. On Sept. 24, 1942, he married Mildred Hutchinson, who passed away May 21, 2014.
He farmed on the Joe Alexander farm for a few years before entering the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served aboard the USS Terror during World War II when it was struck by Japanese Forces on May 1, 1944. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
He was a member of the Rushville Church of God, where he helped in the construction of the church. He operated many gas stations in the Rushville area, and also drove a semi for Perkins Furniture Transport for 14 years. After he retired, he worked for Willowood Apartments and later for Public Storage.
In 2002, he and Mildred moved to the Warsaw area, where they lived for 12 years.
His greatest love was for his six children, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Surviving are five children: Jackie Cook and Lois Patmore, both of Warsaw; Bobby Borders, Birmingham, Ala.; Maurice Borders, San Diego, Calif.; and Fred Borders, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Betty Cadwalder, New Salem, and June Wayt, Rushville. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Lou Thomaston, who died Feb. 13, 2009; his parents; two brothers, Harrell and William “Dutch” Borders; and three sisters: Mary Sailor, Maxine Mitchel and Mae Ball.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Moster Mortuary, Rushville, with military honors by the Rush County Veteran’s Honor Guard. Burial is in the Arlington East Hill Cemetery.
