Gladys M. Reese, 97, died at 5:55 p.m. July 17, 2011, in the University Park Nursing Center, Fort Wayne.

She was born Oct. 22, 1913, in Palestine, to Edwin A. and Flo Opal Ellis Shirey. On May 26, 1956, in Angola, she married Guy Reese Sr., who died Jan. 20, 1993.

She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Indianapolis, Jan. 13, 1943, and served during World War II. She was honorably discharged as PhM3c Gladys M. Shirey, Sept. 22, 1945. Living most of her life in the Palestine area, she was an elementary teacher in many of the Kosciusko County schools and retired from the Wa-Nee School System in 1979 after teaching a total of 35 years. She graduated from Pestalozzi Teacher College, Chicago, Ill., and furthered her education at Manchester College and IPFW. She was a member of American Legion Post 49.

Surviving are two sisters, Delores Harman, Palestine, and Betty (and spouse Ralph) Evans, Warsaw; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Nadine Stanley, who died March 7, 2011; and four brothers, Virgil, Woodrow,  Guido and Dean Shirey.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, officiated by Pastor Dennis Bollenbacher of New Beginnings Community Church, Atwood. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military graveside honors by American Legion Post 49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, both in Warsaw.

Calling is one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
