Girls Hoops Season Is In Full Swing

This is an article I had planned to post last week, but what happened at the University of Missouri was just too important to not comment on.
The girls basketball season is underway, and it should be a fascinating season around the area. I know that you’ve already been reading the previews of the area teams and the Times-Union’s Dale Hubler and Mark Howe did a great job with those again this year, but by delaying this article by just a week it DOES give us a chance to see how teams are doing. I mean, Warsaw started playing as late as anyone in the area but by the end of this week they will already have four games in the rear view mirror.
Here are some early observations:
• The expanded basketball schedules and new calendar for girls basketball caused players who play both volleyball and basketball to get an even shorter break than in years past – if they got a break at all. My previously expressed fears that girls will choose one or the other is justified and I hope the IHSAA takes another look at this soon. If volleyball coaches don’t want to start their seasons earlier in August (which I totally get), maybe they should be allowed to play one more weekend tournament to help condense their schedule and give those multiple-sport athletes their week off back.
• Tippecanoe Valley is off to a very good start despite a couple of injuries. The darlings of last year’s girls basketball tournament are 2-0 with a 20-point home win over Culver Academy and a 15-point win at home over Bremen. Coach Chris Kindig has the one dominant post player in the area in Anne Secrest, who led the Lady Vikings all the way to the Class 3A state finals in February and she looks poised to take them through another special season.
• Warsaw is 0-2 after losing 55-50 last night at Luers 5. The Lady Tigers gave a much better effort in last night’s loss after losing 60-32 in a lifeless defeat at Huntington North Saturday.
I have been covering the Lady Tigers since 1991 and have gone back through the record books, and I have yet to find a season like this one – there is not a single senior on the roster. There have been seasons where they had only one, like in 2003 when Rachel Franklin was the only 12th grader. Michelle Harter knew this was coming because last year she had a team that was made up of seniors and sophomores. The good news: these girls have played a lot of basketball and should get better as they learn to find their way. The bad news: the schedule really doesn’t allow them a chance to catch up! The Lady Tigers continue their three-game season-opening road swing at 3A No. 6 Valley Friday before hosting 4A No. 9 Noblesville Saturday night. Then next week they host 4A No. 3 Penn and red-hot Whitko, with road games at Plymouth, Columbia City and Wawasee before Christmas.
• Speaking of those Lady Wildcats, they are 5-0 after laying waste to Peru last night, 64-17. No one has played within 10 points of Whitko, including 3A No. 9 Columbia City. They will get a big test Friday when they head to Huntington North. The key for their success will be avoiding the momentum-killing injuries they have suffered in recent years.
We also need to take care of a little business here today too.
Warsaw girls basketball games, Warsaw boys basketball games and Tiger Talk have a new radio home. All three of those very high-profile sports properties and Tiger Football next fall have been moved to News Now Warsaw 99.7 FM and 1480 AM.
The radio station’s purchase of 99.7 that we announced earlier this fall has been a game changer for us and opened the door for us to make this change. ESPN 102.7 was a terrific upgrade for Warsaw’s broadcasts from WRSW-AM’s feeble night-time signal, but with the arrival of 99.7 FM to the Lake City Media family it becomes the best option for Tiger fans.
It creates the Warsaw Tiger Sports Network: four different ways you can hear Tiger Sports in your living room, vehicle or around the world. You have 1480 AM, 99.7 FM (which simulcasts News Now Warsaw on the FM dial), online at www.newsnowwarsaw.com and on News Now Warsaw’s Tune In Radio app.
I’m excited about it. It puts Warsaw sports back on a Warsaw-based radio station and that’s the way it should be.
