Gilbert To Lead Wawasee Board In 2007

Serving as board president for 2008 will be George Gilbert, with Dallas Winchester as vice president. Becky Linnemeier was elected secretary, and Lisa Hall is recording secretary.[[In-content Ad]]David Cates was appointed board attorney, and his contract for services for the year was approved. Board of Finance officers are Mary Louise Dixon, president, and Mike Wilson, secretary. Wilson also will serve as the board representative to the Vocational Advisors' Council.
Tom Edington, Jim Evans, Bob Lahrman and Joy Goshert are the appointed administrators who will open sealed bids and receive quotes for school business.
Two presentations were made by Superintendent Dr. Thomas Edington. Randy Warren was recognized as the 2007 Indiana Rural Teacher of the Year, and Phil Metcalf received the 2007 Award of Merit.
In personnel matters, the board approved several hires.
In certified personnel, Anthony Miller will be hired on a temporary teacher contract as a third-grade teacher at Syracuse School. Nancy Nelson will teach the spring semester adult education GED class from Jan. 15 through April 22. The class will meet for 25 nights, three hours per night.
In support service personnel, Sandra Cantu was hired as an English as a second language paraprofessional at Milford School through March 21. Special education paraprofessional Lauren Allen will transfer from North Webster Elementary School to Wawasee Middle School; and Rachel Dittmer is transferring from remediation paraprofessional to special education paraprofessional at North Webster.
Erin Eling, Milford School recess paraprofessional, resigned effective Dec. 8, 2007; and Cherrie Fox has resigned as a special education paraprofessional at Syracuse, effective Jan. 18.
Julia Fugate, Milford School ESL paraprofessional, has requested a leave of absence through March 21.
Susan Cockburn, Syracuse fifth-grade teacher, retired as of Dec. 21.
The board approved a new course for 12th grade to begin with the 2008-2009 school year. The course is law enforcement and it "includes specialized classroom and practical experiences related to public safety occupations such as law enforcement, loss protection services, and homeland security. Training is based on standards and content similar to that provided by officially designated law enforcement agencies."
This course will be taught off-site from WHS, and is in partnership with Ivy Tech Community College, Warsaw.
The class will be limited to 20 students. It is a six-credit, three-trimester, two-period course. More information will be available soon.
