He was born Dec. 14, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to Anthony and Celia Victoria Staneck Rugs. In April 1956, he married Doris Spears Rugs, who survives in Warsaw.
He was a resident of Kosciusko County since 1963, where he worked for 23 years for R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Warsaw, retiring in 1992 as a customer service representative. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He taught chess at Baker Youth Club, Warsaw, and was an avid chess player, having once played against Bobby Fisher. He was also an avid golfer.
He also will be lovingly remembered by his three daughters: Theresa (and spouse Jack) Wilhite, Warsaw; Deborah Rugs (and spouse Bruce Wertheimer), Lutz, Fla.; Kathleen (and spouse Lyle) Meeker, Warsaw; nine grandchildren: Brandon (and spouse Stacey) Wilhite, Lawrenceville, Ga.; Stacey (and spouse Clinton) Judd, Lance Wilhite, Shaun and Michal Meeker and Ruth (and spouse Juan) Larios, all of Warsaw; Clayson (and spouse Debora) Wilhite, Mishawaka; Ellie and Kirk Wertheimer, both of Lutz; five great-grandchildren: Carson and Reagan Judd; Linux Wilhite; and Joshua and J.D. Larios. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Pastor Brandon Wilhite officiating.
Calling is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
