SYRACUSE - George Laucks Xanders Jr., 94, died Nov. 18, 2008, in Warsaw.

"Zum" (to his friends) was born April 12, 1914, in a house on Front Street in Syracuse to George L. Sr. and Ruth Bittman Xanders. In 1953, he married Lois Mary Ford, who preceded him in death.

He attended grade school in Syracuse and graduated from Howe Military School in 1932. He attended Indiana University, graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1937, and from the School of Law in 1939.

He served in the U.S. Army 32nd Division during World War II, stationed in Australia and New Guinea. He remained in the reserves after the war, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel.

A lifetime Syracuse resident, he practiced law and operated an insurance agency there until retirement in 1982. Over the years, he maintained homes in Naples, Fla.; Green Valley, Ariz.; Santa Fe, N.M.; and Diamondhead, Miss., but always came home to Syracuse.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he knew the lakes well. He remained an active leader in the Canada Speckled Trout Club, Mile 60, Alva, ON (founded by his father), making his last trip at age 91. He also golfed from Florida to California and was a long-time member of Tippecanoe Lake Country Club.

He was a founding member of Syracuse Rotary Club, a member of American Legion Post 223 and a 50-year member of the Masonic fraternity.

Surviving are a daughter, Chris (and spouse Robert) Trame; a son, George (and spouse Ann); three grandchildren, Robert, George IV and Thomas; a sister, Joan Haas; and a brother, William Henry Isaac Xanders. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas.

Services will be at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at All Saints Episcopal Church, 7812 E. Vawter Park Road, Syracuse, with Father Larry Biller officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery,

A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. at Bonar Cottage, 13354 N. East Shore Drive, Syracuse.

Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, is in charge of arrangements.
