George K. Konopasek Jr., 53, Albuquerque, N.M., passed away peacefully following a short illness Nov. 1, 2009.

He was born Nov. 4, 1955, in Gary, to George and Marge Konopasek.

Raised in Griffith, he graduated from Griffith High School in 1973 and participated in basketball, baseball and football. Following high school, he attended Purdue University for two years. He eventually went on to become a certified welder and a member of East Chicago's Boilermaker Union. In 1989, he moved to New Mexico as he loved the mountains and mild winter conditions. In 1998, he was involved in a significant accident which left him disabled. He retired from work and moved into Camino, an assisted living community in New Mexico where he lived until his death. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing. He would sit for countless hours at his parent's home on Hoffman Lake smoking his favorite cigar and fishing for whatever would tug his line. He had a kind and generous heart and will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.

Survivors include three children: Nicole (and spouse Jake) Wilson, Rochester; Michelle (and spouse Michael) Coers; Josh Konopasek, Kewanna; three grandchildren: Matthew and Michael Coers, Kewanna, and Ashlynn Vanlake, Kewanna; his parents, Warsaw; three sisters: Barb (and spouse Rich) Lambright, Simpsonville, S.C.; Jody Blest, Albuquerque, N.M.; Katie (and spouse Bill) Church, Summerfield, N.C.; and a brother, Ed (and spouse Jill) Konopasek, De Pere, Wis.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to his many friends and the caregivers at Camino Assisting Living Community, Albuquerque, N.M. Additionally, the kind doctors and nurses at Presbyterian Hospital, Albuquerque, N.M., who provided outstanding care for George were of great comfort to his family, thank you all.

Services will be Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw.

Calling is from 9 to 10 a.m. with a funeral mass immediately following at 10 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
