He was born May 24, 1927, in Mishawaka, to George Clarence and Ethel Mae Besse Messmore. He was married Oct. 1, 1949, in Pierceton, to N. Jean Werstler, who preceded him in death Nov. 21, 2002.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he faithfully served his country in the 783rd United States Army Corps as a Private First Class from Nov. 23, 1945, to May 4, 1947. He was a self-employed dairy and grain farmer for 35 years. In addition, he was employed by DaLite Screen, Warsaw, in the shipping department, retiring in 2004 after 19 years of service. He enjoyed many hobbies, including singing in gospel groups, popping kettle corn, serving with the Jonah Fish Fry, serving as a 4-H leader and council member and serving as a steward for the North Winona Church of the Brethren for 28 years where he was a member.
Surviving are two sons, Bruce (and spouse Pam) and Brent (and spouse Renea) Messmore, all of Pierceton; a sister, Marie Trump, Pierceton; eight grandchildren: Lori (and spouse Kenny) Montgomery; Julie (and spouse Ernesto) Garafalo; Matt (and spouse Erica) and Phil (and spouse Tiffany) Reed; Amanda (and spouse Adam) Hopkins; and Steve (and spouse Rachael), Shana and Valerie Messmore; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also preceding him in death were five brothers and one sister.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton, with Military Honors rendered by the Warsaw American Legion post #49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars post #1126.
Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
