GARRETT – Friday's Class 3A Sectional 18 semifinal game at Garrett didn't start well or end well for Whitko High School's football team.
The host Railroaders ran the opening kickoff back 98 yards for a touchdown and outscored the Wildcats 28-0 in the second half, derailing the Wildcats' dream of playing for a sectional title with a 42-14 defeat.
Garrett improved to 9-2 on the year and will play Jimtown (9-2) in Friday's sectional final, while Whitko concluded its season with a 6-5 mark.
Jimtown advanced to the sectional championship game with a 42-0 win over Lakeland (9-2).
Garrett was impressive on both offense and defense, as the Railroaders racked up 321 yards on 39 carries, while limiting the Wildcats to 98 yards on 37 carries.
Whitko quarterback Alex Stoddard completed 6 of 12 passes for 130 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown to Connor Stouder that tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter.
Garrett signal caller Brayden Moreau attempted just six passes, but completed three of them for a total of 62 yards.
About the only thing the Railroaders' offense did wrong all night was throw a pair of interceptions.
Todd Frickey led Garrett's rushing attack with 13 carries for 135 yards and four touchdowns, while Brandon Porter – who scored on the opening kickoff – racked up 97 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and Moreau 62 yards on seven attempts.
Chris Bumbaugh led Whitko's ground game with 48 yards on 12 carries, while Stoddard added 12 rushes for 20 yards and Austin Mort 10 carries for 18 yards.
Mort scored a 2-yard touchdown for the Wildcats in the second quarter, knotting the game at 14-14 with 39 seconds remaining in the first half.
Stouder caught two passes for 95 yards, while Bumbaugh caught two passes for 19 yards.[[In-content Ad]]
