Heart of Compassion International Ministries is seeking funds to assist one of its two schools in Haiti to continue to meet the needs of its students.
Heart of Compassion offers a school where students can go that does not cost the students to attend. The organization is funded through financial donations.
Silver Lake residents Dwight and Jennifer Wagoner started the organization seven years ago.
The couple had been going to Haiti for 15 years building churches and schools with their daughter, Ashly Mardy.
Ashly married Vladimy, a Haitian, and he wanted to help his people so the Wagoners started their first school.
The first school, Every Child School, started seven years ago and is financially sound through donations.
The second school, Project School, was started three years ago by the Wagoners, and funds are needed to keep the school going.
The Wagoners put a well in by the second school three years ago because the Haitians did not have water.
Besides schooling, the organization also offers a Feed A Family program where the Haiti families are given food once a month, and also assists them in starting their own businesses. The organization also operates a church and helps assist with medical needs.
One hundred percent of proceeds raised will go to assist the school with teachers’ salaries and purchasing books for the students.
A teacher’s salary at the Haiti school is $1,000 per month, and books cost $3,000 per year.
Each school has nine teachers, one director and one principal.
The school teaches math, spelling, science, social studies, history, geography, grammar and French.
Each school serves 150 children ages 5 to 15.
“When we started the first school seven years ago we had 15-year-old students in our school because they had never gone to school before because there wasn’t a school there,” Jennifer said. “If they do not get an education they don’t have any hope and can’t get a job.”
The school teaches up to the sixth grade, and then students attend a secondary school.
“The purpose is to provide the children with an education to get them off the streets,” Jennifer said.
To donate to the school, visit www.hoc-haiti.org or send a check to Heart of Compassion International Ministries, 6796 W. CR 1400N, Silver Lake, IN 46982.[[In-content Ad]]
