PIERCETON – The Whitko School Board approved a fund transfer and heard that because of the federal debt crisis, school entitlement programs are losing funding.

The board approved a transfer of funds to show a positive balance as of Dec. 31.

Tom McFarland, director of financial operations, said because they receive money from property taxes in June and December, to avoid a negative balance between January through May, funds must be moved around to show a positive balance.

Whitko Superintendent Steve Clason said that due to the nation’s debt situation, funding for Title I and II and special needs has been cut.

Whitko saw a $7,000 cut for Title I and $800 cut for Title II.

Title I is geared toward helping low-income families, while Title II is for financial assistance for supplies and materials.

In school reports, Pierceton Elementary Principal Eric Speicher said the school is trying to get iPads to help autistic and ADD students.

Speicher also said Pierceton is keeping its Facebook page to direct parents to the school’s website.

South Whitley Elementary School Principal Bruce Hansen said the school recently held its art show, music program and Veterans Day assembly. The spell bowl team finished second in the small-school division at a competition in Wabash. First trimester awards for students is Dec. 2.

Whitko Middle School recently held a food drive where students collected 2,135 items and $589. Sixth grade was the first-place class.

Whitko High School is gearing up for winter sports and will be holding a flying competition for students.

The board also approved Whitko’s driver education program.

Clason said compared to other school districts, the cost of the program at Whitko is lower.

Bids for three new buses were approved to be advertised at Monday night’s meeting.

Sara St. Clair, corporation nurse, discussed how important it was for kids to have proper nutrition and that adults need to set examples for kids in their lifestyle habits.

The board also went over the ongoing facilities plan committee meetings that have been taking place.

The Whitko school board will next meet Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. There is an executive session at 6:30 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
