BOURBON - Over the summer, the Triton boys basketball team traveled to Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne and won a team free throw shooting contest.

That charity stripe acumen came in handy as the Trojans went 28 of 34 from the line in a 56-53 win over Oregon-Davis in Triton's season opener Friday night.

In a back and forth affair, Triton was able to hang on despite a late Bobcat charge.

With 26.3 seconds left in regulation and the Trojans up 55-53, Triton gave Oregon-Davis new life. After the Bobcats' Justin Egger missed the second of two free throws, the Trojans gave the ball right back on an over-and-back call.

Oregon-Davis looked to run a play but an errant pass forced Egger to attempt to save the ball from going out of bounds buy throwing it into the arms of Triton freshman Bruce Grimm.

Grimm was fouled then hit 1 of 2 free throws to push the Trojan lead to 56-53.

The Bobcats last-ditch effort to tie things up failed as Egger missed a three pointer from the corner as time expired.

"It's always good to get off to a good start," said Triton head coach Jason Groves. "No matter what the circumstances are."

Groves was named interim head coach last year after the resignation of Mike McBride on the heels of complaints from parents.

The Trojans lost their four remaining games then Groves was named head coach on a full-time basis.

Groves entered the season with a wealth of young players and those underclassmen were integral in Triton's win over Oregon-Davis.

Sophomore forward Jake Everett finished with 23 points and eight rebounds as he shot an astounding 17 of 19 from the free-throw line.

"Jake is just an awesome kid," said Groves. "He's one of our better free throw shooters and he's who we wanted at the line towards the end."

Everett was 10 of 11 from the stripe in the final quarter.

The duo of Everett and fellow sophomore Troy McIntyre sent the Triton crowd into frenzy when McIntyre found a wide-open Everett under the basket for an old-fashioned three-point play.

That score put the Trojans up 55-52 after the Bobcats tied things up at 49-49 on a trifecta by Nathan Ferch.

Oregon-Davis went on a 10-2 run inside of three minutes left to play to erase an eight-point Trojan lead.

The Bobcats made their charge despite leading scorer Brandon Johnston fouling out with 4:10 left to play.

Johnston finished with a team-high 17 points but his night ended early after picking up four personal fouls and a technical foul, which are counted against a player's foul total.

Johnston and the rest of the Bobcats struggled from the field early but crept back into the ballgame by employing an aggressive full-court press defense where Oregon-Davis would run three defenders at the ball handler.

The Trojans were forced into 25 turnovers against the Bobcat press, but Groves was pleased with how his young point guards handled themselves.

"I thought Grimm and (AJ) Harrison did a good job and played an excellent game," said Groves. "At times we were helter skelter, but overall we handled their press decently. They got after us with that unconventional press. They had three guys running at the ball, but I thought our kids did a good job of being aggressive."

Senior Lane Davis helped the Trojan cause with 10 points and six rebounds. Grimm finished his first varsity contest with eight points and four steals. McIntyre scored seven points, while Trent Furnivall had four and AJ Harrison finished with three. Chad Kauffman rounded out the Trojan scoring with one point.

Triton is in action again Tuesday when it hosts Plymouth.
