LOGANSPORT - Freda Pauline Scherer, 89, of Winona Lake, and formerly of Logansport, passed away at 8:40 p.m. June 16, 2010, at Grace Village, Winona Lake.

She was born May 24, 1921, in Logansport, to Frederick and Clara Werner Schukofski. On Oct. 9, 1954, she married William Henry Scherer, who died Aug. 9, 1999.

In 1939 she graduated from Logansport High School. In 1943 she went to Chicago to attend Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated as an registered nurse in 1946. After graduation, she and two close friends from Michael Reese moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to work in a local hospital. She then returned to Logansport in the early 1950s to care for her parents. She worked in the office of Dr. Bernard Hall. During these years she married Bill Scherer, who attended her church, Grace Lutheran, and began her family, raising them on the farm east of Logansport. Her immediate and extended family regularly enjoyed the meals created with her cooking and baking skills.

In the 1970s, after an absence, she returned to her profession as a surgical recovery nurse at Memorial Hospital. She had a life-long love of the nursing profession and had been a member of the Florence Nightengale Club. She also volunteered at Memorial Hospital in Logansport.

In 2002 she moved to Grace Village Retirement Community, Winona Lake. It was a period of life she enjoyed, especially when playing euchre with other residents. She also lovingly followed the activities of her five grandchildren whom she adored. She was a quietly spiritual woman who loved the Lord.

Surviving are a son, Robert W. (and spouse Colleen C.) Scherer, Warsaw; a daughter, Barbara A. Scherer (Kent D.) Alder, Indianapolis; grandchildren: Jennifer N., Megan E. and Bradley R. Scherer and Hayley M. and Samuel K. Alder. She was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Schukofski.
