Fred Ditmire

He was born June 19, 1934, to Raymond and Mildred Zechiel Ditmire. On June 15, 1956, in Leiter’s Ford, he married Mildred “Millie” Davis, who survives.
In 1952, he graduated from Aubbeenaubbee Township High School, Leiter’s Ford. At 18, he assumed the responsibility of the family farm after his father died in March 1953. In 1985, the Ditmire family received the Hoosier Homestead Award for this farm (Mahler Heritage) and also a farm of the Ditmire heritage. Through the years he accumulated additional acreage, harvesting beans, corn and wheat from 3,500 acres. In addition to the crops he oversaw, he annually raised 400 feeder cattle. In later years he did bulldozing in many surrounding communities for other farmers. Serving as a member of the Aubbeenaubbee Township Advisory Board for a number of years, he was a 54-year member of Leiter’s Ford United Methodist Church, transferring his membership from the Delong United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are two daughters; Coleen Watwood, Culver, and Melanie (and spouse JayC) Pitts, Rochester; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren; four sisters: Ruth Thomas and Doris (and spouse Gus) Brenner, all of South Bend; Jean Triplet,Culver; and Jane Hartle, Argos; and two brothers, Norman (and spouse Janet) Ditmire, South Bend, and Lee Ditmire, Culver. He was preceded in death by a sister.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, with the Revs. Bob Metzger and Nancy Foster officiating. Burial will be in Leiter’s Ford IOOF Cemetery.
Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.
