The Freaky 5K Family Halloween Run and Walk is in October to raise money for the Cancer Care Fund of Kosciusko County.
The event is Oct. 31 with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the K21 Health Pavilion, 1515 Provident Court, Warsaw. There will be a brief program at 9 a.m. and the race and walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. The race will be chip-timed by the Kosciusko Runner’s Association.
Kirk Ray, Lutheran Health Network KCH CEO, presented a check Tuesday to Ron Smock, 5K event co-chair. The fund raises money to directly assist cancer patients in Kosciusko County with the financial burdens of their cancer diagnosis and treatment.
KCH will be the title sponsor for the run and walk, which goes from the K21 Health Pavilion around the Lake City Greenway and finishes near the KCH campus.
Ray will be participating in the 5K.
“I am participating in a half-marathon in Indy and this will be good training for me,” Ray said, also remarking that KCH is proud to be a sponsor of the 5K. “This race is congruent with our mission and cancer programs at Kosciusko Community Hospital. It’s important for the community to see that we are committed to cancer services and this is another way to get out awareness about cancer care and prevention of cancer.”
CCF volunteers organize various events throughout the year, such as The Passion For Fashion, Cocktails for Cancer, the Steve Dodds’ Golf Fundraiser and the Gala and Auction.
“I thought that a 5K race would target a completely different group of people who may not know about the CCF, yet are passionate about supporting cancer related fundraisers and who are avid runners,” Smock said.
He said what is unique about the CCF is that 100 percent of all net funds raised are used to financially assist cancer patients and their families right here in the county.
The K21 Health Foundation administers the fund at no cost which means more funds go to friends and neighbors in need.
“To have the Lutheran Network/KCH get behind our cause and be the title sponsor is a big boost to our fundraiser. We want this to be a fun, family event and are hoping people will come appropriately dressed for Halloween. Costumes are definitely encouraged,” Smock said.
There are several ways to become involved as a participant or volunteer or to make a direct donation to the Cancer Care Fund.
Participants can preregister at www.runsignup.com, www.runkra.com, www.k21foundation.org or the Cancer Care Fund KC Facebook page. All participants that pre-register will get a souvenir T-shirt:
