NAPPANEE - Francis Eugene "Gene" Sterling, 66, of 467 E. Marion St., Nappanee, died at 9 p.m. Aug. 16, 2009, in his residence.

He was born Dec. 20, 1942, in Connersville, to Harold Eugene and Betty Margaret Burgdolfee Sterling. His first wife, Barbara Jean Sterling, died Aug. 20, 1984. On Sept. 26, 1986, in Nappanee, he married Cara Wegmiller, who survives.

Moving to Nappanee in 1969, he retired as service manager at Monaco Coach. He attended First Brethren Church, Nappanee. He was a longtime ASA Softball umpire; a longtime referee for the Nappanee Parks Women's Volleyball League; and a former women's softball coach.

Also surviving are two sons, Troy Sterling (and Patricia Baker), Wakarusa, and Chris Sterling, Nappanee; a daughter, Missy (and George Antal), Indianapolis; two stepdaughters, Keesha (and spouse Mark) Schmucker and Timi (and spouse Andy) Sloat, all of Nappanee; a stepson, Chad Flory, Elkhart; six brothers: Leon (and spouse Deb) Sterling, Bill (and spouse Darla) Sterling, all of Nappanee; Junior (and spouse Mary Ann) Moore, Milroy; Fred (and spouse Ann) Becht, Greensburg; Greg (and spouse Linda) Hightower, Terre Haute; and Byron (and spouse Crystal) Lynn, Indianapolis; and a sister, Debbie (and spouse Jerry) Hochstetler, Syracuse.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Brethren Church, Nappanee, with Pastor Tom Schiefer officiating. Burial will be in South Union Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Chapel, Nappanee, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
