She was born Jan. 4, 1916, in Dayton, Ohio, to Frank and Carrie M. Eck Summers. On Sept. 28, 1940, in First Lutheran Church, Dayton, she married Eugene A. Pifer, who died Dec. 12, 1980.
Raised in Dayton, she moved to Lake Wawasee, Syracuse, from Columbus, Ohio, in 1976. She was a secretary in Ohio for many years and a teller at State Bank, Syracuse, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, and United Methodist Women's Circle. She was a graduate of Fairmont High School and Sinclair College, both in Dayton. She enjoyed her family, gardening, reading and travel.
Surviving are two daughters, Judy Schmahl, Syracuse, and Mrs. James (Linda) Eastman, Newark, Ohio; nine grandchildren: Jeff (and wife Donna) Schmahl, Indianapolis; Steve (and wife Amy) Schmahl, Mrs. Bob (Julie) Sanders and Mrs. Brad (Carrie) Vonderheide, all of Denver; David (and wife Kimberlee) Schmahl, Ogden Dunes; Christopher Jenkins, Fort Riley, Kan.; and Mark Eastman, Beth Ossa and Mrs. Franc (Laura) Pastorius, all of Newark, Ohio; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, James (and wife Dolores) Summers, Kettering, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Margaret) Meckstroth, Centerville, Ohio; and 10 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Dale Summers, and a niece.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary United Methodist Church, 801 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, with Pastors David Herr and John Modesitt officiating. A private graveside service will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse.
Memorials to Calvary United Methodist Church or Miller's Merry Manor, Syracuse.
