Four Triton Track And Field Athletes Make State

KOKOMO - If you want to study a track athlete with good running form, don't watch Triton sophomore sprinter Matt Anders or Triton junior distance runner Nathan Gephart.

Triton coach Curt Kreft will be the first to tell you that.

"Nate's so springy when he runs," Kreft said, "and that detracts from his speed. But that's just the way he is. Matt doesn't look like a 400 runner. He has no knee lift.

"We have some unorthodox runners."

Like the NFL prospect who may not be a workout warrior but stars once the game kicks off, all Anders and Gephart do is get big-time results.

Triton followed last week's sectional team title by placing in the top three in five events at Thursday's Kokomo Regional. The top three in each event advance to next week's state finals. South Bend Clay won the team title with 78 points; Triton finished fifth with 39.5 points.

Clay rallied for the win in the final event scored, the shot put. Clay's Michael Macellari (53-11) and Jason Brown (50-9 1/2) took first and second, respectively, to overcome Marion (68 points) for the team title. Clay scored 18 points in the shot put; Marion scored zero.

At last week's sectional, Anders and Gephart combined for 58.5 points, outscoring seven teams by themselves.

They picked up where they left off.

Anders, seeded fourth in the 400-meter dash, placed first with a school-record time of 49.11 seconds.

"Matt was a little worried," Kreft said. "He had not run any races under 50 for four or five weeks. I told him that he hadn't had any competition, anything to get his adrenaline flowing."

Gephart advances to the state meet in two events, the 1600 and 3200. He entered seeded sixth in both but placed third in both. He ran the 1600 in 4:31.66 and the 3200 in 9:50.34, both career-best times.

For Gephart, the meet put an exclamation point - it's his first trip to the state meet - on how far he's come since ACL reconstructive surgery on his left knee in February 2000.

"Nate Gephart had two thirds," Kreft said, "and he didn't even run the first half of the year. He had tendinitis, and when he came back, he didn't look very good at first."

While it was the same knee, this year's injury was unrelated to the ACL injury.

"I had tendinitis on the left side of the knee," Gephart said, "that caused pretty severe pain.

"I'm still not 100 percent when I run. I was kind of nervous coming in, but I knew I could do it. My adrenaline starts pumping, and I do well in tough competitions. My best time was 4:34 in the conference meet. After I got third in the mile, the butterflies went away."

Anders and Gephart were only part of the story for Triton. Triton junior Aaron Trieschman, who won last week's sectional with a throw of 142 feet, 2 inches, uncorked a season-best toss of 153-4 to take third. How surprising was Trieschman advancing? He was seeded ninth out of 16 athletes.

"We had a real good discus," Kreft said. "He threw 153 before, and this was his best by 4 inches. This is a big deal for him. He's wanted this for a year."

Also moving on to the state meet for Triton was senior Jim Read, who tied for third with a high jump of 6-1.

"To have four advance in five events is a big success," Kreft said, "Usually we have only one or none going down to state."

The only thing that didn't go Triton's way was the pole vault. Matt Yankovich pole vaulted 13 feet to take second at last week's sectional; he failed to place at the regional.

"It went exactly as I thought it would except for pole vault," Kreft said. "Matt just didn't make his opening height. You miss that one, and then you start having some fear."

Athletes from Manchester, Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko also competed at the regional. Out of the three schools, only one athlete, Manchester's David Bazzoni, advances to the state meet. Bazzoni won the pole vault with a height of 15 feet.

Just missing the cut for Manchester was Klay Bechtold, who placed fourth in the long jump (20-8 3/4). Also for the Squires, Nate Kerr took ninth in the 400 (52.19 seconds).

Valley's top finisher was Ross Stutzman, who took 11th in the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Whitko's 400 relay team of Burl Haywood, Brent Goble, Adam Hall and Brandon Waterson took sixth with a time of 45.07 seconds.

For Triton, Anders placed in two other events, taking fifth in the 100 (11.36 seconds) and seventh in the 200 (23.66 seconds). Christopher Kauffman placed 14th in the 3200 (10:19.34), and Brent Hammond took 16th in the 300 hurdles (44.87 seconds). Triton's 3200 relay team of Aric Hooley, Christopher Zaugg, Dustin Young and Joshua Moore took 16th with a time of 9:05.63.

The state meet takes place Friday in Indianapolis.

"I told our kids if we scored 40 points," Kreft said, "it would be a good night, especially since we're a small school. We were right there with 39.5."
