Four Men Rob Local Veal Barn
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
A Warsaw man was robbed by four men outside a local veal barn Friday evening.
Jose Lopez, of Anchorage Road, Warsaw, was alone in the Strauss Veal barn at 6218 S. CR 400W, Warsaw, around 7 or 7:30 p.m. Friday when a vehicle drove around the parking lot and then left.
According to Lopez, who spoke to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department through an interpreter, about 20 minutes later the car returned and a man entered the south door of the barn and asked Lopez about a job. Lopez told the man to leave and closed the door.
Then three men approached Lopez while he was still near the south door of the barn. Lopez believes the men entered the barn through a different door while the other man distracted him at the south door.
The three men then let the fourth man back into the barn.
Two of the men were armed with large folding knives and another had a large stick or club. The fourth man was not armed.
Lopez was told to leave the barn and get in his own vehicle after one of the men hit him in the left side. Lopez said he did not fall to the ground and was not injured by the blow.
Two of the men stayed inside and and went through the office while the two other men followed Lopez outside.
Once Lopez was in his van, the men took his wallet out of the vehicle. Later Lopez asked the men to leave his wallet. They removed approximately $280 in cash and left the wallet behind.
After taking his money, the men ordered Lopez to go back in the barn as they left the area in a red Chevrolet Cavalier.
Lopez described the suspects as white adult males who were wearing long-sleeved sweatshirts and had masks or bandanas over their faces. The men spoke English during the entire robbery.
The robbery occurred Friday but was not reported until Monday morning. Lopez did not give a reason for waiting to file the police report. Todd Wall, manager at Strauss Veal, called police Monday to report the incident.
Wall said similar incidents have been happening at veal barns in Wabash and southern Kosciusko counties. He believes that some victims may be hesitant to report the incidents because of their immigration status.
According to the Wabash County Sheriff's Department, there have been several break-ins at veal barns throughout the year, but the first robbery occurred Monday night in Wabash County.
The cases are believed to be related, and the Kosciusko and Wabash County Sheriff's Departments are working together on the investigation. Officials have suspects in the case but are not releasing names pending further investigation. [[In-content Ad]]
