The four high schools that saw improvement were Wawasee, Warsaw, Tippecanoe Valley and Triton. Warsaw Community High School had the highest rate of all seven schools in 2014, at 93.8 percent.
Rates at Whitko, Manchester and Lakeland Christian Academy dipped, but only slightly at Whitko.
The graduation rate for the state in 2013-14 jumped to 89.8 percent, up from 88.6 percent the year before, according to the IDOE. Indiana’s non-waiver graduation rate also saw an increase, from 81.7 percent to 83.4.
The non-waiver rate excludes graduates who received a diploma with a waiver and have not met the basic expectation that all students pass the state’s graduation examination before exiting high school with a diploma, according to the IDOE website.
Students receive graduation waivers three ways: 1) successfully completing Core 40 coursework; 2) demonstrating to the satisfaction of the high school that they have met the achievement standard measured by the graduation examination through other means; or 3) completing an internship and a workforce readiness assessment.
In 2014, Wawasee High School had 163 of 184 students graduate for a rate of 88.6 percent. Its non-waiver graduation rate in 2014 was 85.3 percent (157 students). Previously, Wawasee’s graduation rate was 85.6 percent in 2013; 91 percent in 2012; 91.7 percent in 2011; and 83.4 percent in 2010.
Warsaw Community High School had 510 out of 544 students graduate in 2014 for a rate of 93.8 percent, with a non-waiver graduation rate of 87.9 percent (478 students). In 2013, its rate was 87.4 percent; in 2012, 91.4 percent; 2011, 88.8 percent; and in 2010, 83.9 percent.
After two years of a dropping graduation rate, Tippecanoe Valley High School increased in 2014 to 79.7 percent, with 126 out of 158 students graduating. Its non-waiver graduation rate was 73.4 percent with 116 students. Valley’s rate increased from 80.4 percent in 2010 to 84.4 percent in 2011, but dropped to 77.8 and 75.8 percent in 2012 and 2013.
Whitko High School had 134 out of 147 students in the Class of 2014 graduate for a rate of 91.2 percent, with a non-waiver rate of 89.1 percent (131 students). The 2013 rate was 91.3 percent, with 2012’s rate at 86.3 percent; 2011 at 80.7 percent; and 2010 at 90.6 percent.
Triton Jr.-Sr. High School had 71 out of 78 students graduate with the Class of 2014 for a rate of 91 percent. The non-waiver graduation rate was 85.9 percent (67 students). Previously, the school’s rates were 89.8 percent in 2013; 93.8 in 2012; 85.5 in 2011; and 89.7 in 2010.
For a second year, Manchester High School’s graduation rate fell. It had 104 out of 115 students (90.4 percent) graduate in 2014, with a non-waiver rate of 86.1 percent (99 students). In 2013, its graduation rate was 95.8 percent; 2012, 97.8 percent; 2011, 96.4 percent; and 89.2 percent in 2010.
Lakeland Christian Academy had the biggest drop in its graduation rate from 2013 to 2014. This is only the second year the school in Winona Lake has reported its rate to the state.
For 2014, 13 of 15 students graduated from LCA for a rate of 86.7 percent. Its non-waiver graduation rate was 60 percent, with nine students graduating. In 2013, it had 33 out of 33 students graduate for a 100 percent rate.
In response to the state’s overall graduation rate, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz issued the following statement: “I want to thank Indiana’s students, educators and families for their continued hard work. Because of their efforts and the outreach efforts of the Department of Education, more children are graduating from high school and preparing themselves for college and career. Today’s news is yet another sign of the great work happening every day in schools throughout Indiana.”
