'Forum On Flooding' Scheduled Nov. 17

Flooding has plagued the Kosciusko, Noble and Whitley counties area four times in the past two years.

Kosciusko Lakes and Streams and the Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation will sponsor a Forum on Flooding Nov. 17 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the North Webster Community Center to provide answers to homeowners and interested citizens.[[In-content Ad]]Experts will discuss causes of flooding and human activity related to flooding in two identical 30-minute presentations. One presentation will start at 5:30 p.m., and the other one will begin at 6:30 p.m. An open house format from 6 to 8 p.m. will allow community members to interact with agency representatives and get their questions answered one on one.

Representatives from the following organizations have been invited to participate: Indiana Department on Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife, IDNR Division of Water, IDNR Law Enforcement, United States Geological Survey; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association/Weather Service, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation, as well as Kosciusko, Noble and Whitley counties representatives from planning, drainage/surveyor, soil and water conservation, health department and emergency management.

Examples of topics to be presented and open for questions include past and recent rainfall, past and recent stream and lake levels, dams and control structures, flood zones, National Flood Insurance Program, ditches and drainage, dredging, lake closing, wells and septic systems, mitigation, response plans, construction ordinances, rain gardens, shoreline stabilization and wetlands.

"Although the panel discussions will focus on the upper Tippecanoe Watershed, any citizen who experienced flooding problems throughout the Kosciusko, Noble, Whitley counties area will benefit from hearing this information and speaking with the presenters," said Eileen Boekestein, coordinator of Kosciusko County Lakes and Streams.
