A Fort Wayne juvenile is charged with armed robbery and being held without bond in Kosciusko County Jail.
Tiffany Shauntae Potter, 16, was arrested early this morning and charged with robbing the Shell Food Mart on U.S. 30, near Warsaw. She and three other Fort Wayne juveniles were stopped by police after a brief chase on U.S. 30.
Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department received a call at 12:52 this morning that the Shell station was robbed and a gun was displayed. The four suspects stole an undisclosed amount of gasoline, but no cash.
Two sheriff's deputies were en route from Pierceton when one spotted the van with the juveniles headed east on U.S. 30. At the intersection of Ind. 13, police reported the van turned around and headed west, back toward Warsaw.
According to police reports, the van took off speeding when officers turned on the flashing lights. County and state officers chased the van while Warsaw Police Department officers set up Stop Sticks near the Car Company on U.S. 30.
When the van hit the Stop Sticks, the tires began to go flat, and the 14-year-old unlicensed driver apparently lost control and ran off the road.
The driver and another 14-year-old ran from the scene and have not been found. Potter and a 12-year-old girl, who had been sitting in the back seat of the van, were arrested at the scene.
According to police, Potter is the suspect who showed the .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun at the Shell station. She allegedly told police the gun had been taken from the 14-year-old's mother's purse in Fort Wayne. She also told police they took the van from the same family. It was not reported stolen.
Potter was charged with armed robbery, a Class B felony, and automatically waived to adult court since the juvenile system does not deal with armed robbery in teens over 16. The other juveniles will be charged with armed robbery, but a county detective said that Fort Wayne probation department will handle the case since the three are under 16. The 12-year-old was released early this morning to her aunt.
The investigation is continuing, and Fort Wayne Police Department will join the search for the missing juveniles.
Potter faces a minimum sentence of six years in prison if she is found guilty of armed robbery.
The Stop Sticks used by the Warsaw Police Department are made to stop vehicles during high-speed chases. The sticks are triangle-shaped devices covered with points that have hollow pins inside. The effect on tires is described as letting air out slowly through a valve, allowing the driver to maintain control as he slows down. [[In-content Ad]]
