FORT WAYNE - People who love choral music now can look forward to a full season of symphonic choral music, as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus presents its first series, "Lincoln Financial Foundation Signature Choral Series", as part of the 2010-11 Fort Wayne Philharmonic season.

Even more exciting for people in Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana who love singing choral music is the opportunity to audition for The Phil Chorus and lend their voices to the 100 or more volunteer singers who will comprise this new, expanded version of the chorus.

Performing symphonic choral music is now open to all who have a successful audition with Chorus Director Robert Nance.

"We need a larger chorus to project and balance against the orchestra," Nance says of the core Phil musicians who will perform in the choral series. "We need 100 voices or more to balance with the symphony ... and to do the bulk of the literature we would like to do. We'll be building on many levels - building skills and building our numbers."

Chorus Manager Laura Burger will schedule the next series of auditions, which will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 24 to 26 at Plymouth Congregational Church. Appointments are required.

Those auditioning will be asked to complete a simple music questionnaire before proceeding to the three-part audition. First will be a few minutes of warm-up, singing several scales to establish vocal range. Second, the singer may perform a prepared piece or may choose to sing part of the "National Anthem". An accompanist will be provided. Those choosing to do a prepared piece must bring music for the accompanist.

Finally, the audition will end with a short listening and sight-singing exercise. Nance will assess each person's musical skills to determine if he or she is a good fit for The Phil Chorus, and singers will be notified of his decision by mail within a week.

Those who are accepted will be expected to adhere to Phil Chorus policies and procedures, including attending mandatory rehearsals scheduled during the month before each concert.[[In-content Ad]]Concerts, which will be at First Wayne Street United Methodist Church, are scheduled for Oct. 29, Jan. 28 and April 8. Supplemental rehearsals will be offered for those who wish to have more help in preparing their music prior to the opening rehearsal.

People who are debating whether or not to go through the audition process are encouraged to take that step. Nance, who directs both professional and amateur choruses, will give each singer a clear evaluation that is intended to nurture a path for years of great singing.

To reserve an audition time, contact Laura Burger at 260-444-6321 or by e-mail at [email protected] Those who have additional questions about the process may contact the chorus director at 260-312-2664 or by e-mail at [email protected]
