NORTH MANCHESTER — When the Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles boys basketball team comes to Manchester on Dec. 15, a special ceremony will take place.
Current Guerin coach Pete Smith coached the Manchester Squires from 1987 to 1991, and this season marks the 25th anniversary of the Manchester team that won the Columbia City Sectional before losing in double overtime in the Ft. Wayne Regional.
Smith’s teams compiled a 66-26 record and built the foundation for a great eight-year run by the Squires from 1987 to 1995 when they won four sectionals and a regional.
The program is still seeking its’ first sectional title in the class basketball era since that 1995 season.
On Dec.  15 Manchester will honor all players who played not only on the 1988 sectional championship team, but players on all four of Smith’s teams he coached, capped by the 1990-91 team that went 20-0 during the regular season.
He left after that season when he accepted the head coaching job at Noblesville High School.
Just this past season his team at Guerin Catholic, also located in Noblesville, won the IHSAA 3A State Championship last season and finished with a 24-5 record.
“I am really happy Manchester is honoring my teams that I had the privilege to coach,” Smith said. “It was a fun, fun time for the town back then. We received excellent community support. (Current Manchester) coach Eric Thompson played against us when I coached the Squires, and I want him to build a successful program as I was fortunate enough to have. I hope bringing the guys back that night to get recognized for their success might spur on the current and future players of MHS, as well as have a nice-sized crowd in a great high school gym.”[[In-content Ad]]
