Former Indy Driver to Speak at Careers for Women Workshop
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
The keynote speaker will be Sarah Fisher.
The eight high schools involved are Argos, Fairfield, Tippecanoe Valley, Triton, Warsaw, Wawasee, West Noble and Whitko.
The workshop will be held at National Guard Armory, 315 W. CR 350N, Warsaw.
The day will begin at 8:50 a.m. with a keynote speaker, followed by round-table discussions where the students have the opportunity to learn about five different careers. After lunch, the students also participate in hands-on activities in different career areas. The workshop will be over at 2 p.m.
At just 30 years old, Fisher has competed in nine Indianapolis 500s, been voted “Most Popular Driver” four times in two separate Series (IndyCar and NASCAR), been awarded “Indy’s Best & Brightest Leaders Under 40” and enters her fourth season as a team owner in 2011.
Fisher is the first woman to qualify fastest for a major North American open-wheel event, the fastest woman to ever qualify for the Indy 500 and is the youngest woman to compete at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In 2008, she formed her own race team: Sarah Fisher Racing (SFR).
In May 2010, Fisher made her ninth start in the Indy 500, marking the most starts for a woman in the 93-year history of the race.
In November, Fisher stepped down as a driver and is concentrating on her owner responsibilities.
Her achievement on the track is only eclipsed by her performance in the classroom. Education has always played an important role in her life. She graduated seventh in her class with honors and a 4.178 grade point average from Teays High School (Ohio) in 1999.
