After recently pleading guilty to theft, a former county employee was sentenced to work release last week in Kosciusko Superior Court I and ordered to repay nearly $36,000.

Betty Ann Davis, 51, of 207 S. Graceland St., Claypool, was a secretary for the Extension office prior to her September 2001 arrest on charges of theft, a Class D felony, and forgery, a Class C felony. Through a plea agreement, the forgery charge was dismissed. She is no longer a county employee.

Davis was sentenced for the theft to three years in prison, with two years allowed served in the Kosciusko County Work Release program and one year suspended for probation. She also was ordered to pay $35,908.14 in restitution; $15,477.23 has already been paid toward that debt and Davis must pay at least $100 per week toward the balance.

Davis admitted to making personal purchases on a county-issued Wal-Mart credit card and to taking money from the 4-H savings account, of which she made herself the only authorized signatory at the bank.

The case was brought to the attention of law enforcement authorities when a county government member notified the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department of a possible embezzlement of funds.

At that time, Davis was interviewed and admitted the wrongdoing, officials said. The misappropriation of funds took place since 1997, according to court documents.

Davis worked in the 4-H office for 20 years. She was charged with and convicted of theft in 1985 after taking money in a similar fashion. Officials said the funds in that case were garnered through the same office, but a different organization. Davis continued to work in the 4-H office while serving a term in the Kosciusko County Work Release program during four years of probation in that case. She also was ordered to make restitution.

Other terms of the current sentence include using the services of Consumer Credit Counseling or a similar organization. Also, she must pay court costs, a $100 fine and a $100 initial and $15 monthly probation user's fee. [[In-content Ad]]
