Warsaw city officials remembered former District 1 Warsaw City Councilman James C. "Mac" Silveus this morning.

Silveus died Wednesday, and his obituary appears on today's page 3A.

He served on Warsaw City Council from January 1988 to December 1999, serving three terms.

He also served on the plan commission for three terms, traffic commission for two terms and Board of Public Works and Safety for one term.[[In-content Ad]]During an interview this morning, Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said he and current City Councilman Jerry Patterson served on the council with Silveus.

Silveus also served on the council with Tammy Rockey and Dewey Lawshe.

Wiggins said he and Silveus expressed interest in filling out then-mayor Jeff Plank's term in 1997. A caucus was held in 1997, and Wiggins was appointed to serve as mayor March 1, 1997, to fill out Plank's term.

"He had the best interest of the city at heart and I was honored to serve with Mac on the council. He was a civic-minded individual," Wiggins said.

Patterson said he enjoyed serving on the council and board of works with Silveus.

"He was a great guy and spent a lot of time making his rounds at city hall and meeting with department heads, and was a friendly and personable guy and a friend of mine," Patterson said.

Councilman Charlie Smith said Mac was a popular councilman who loved the city.

"He was very dedicated in his role as councilman," Smith said.

Councilman Kyle Babcock said Silveus was a great guy and devoted his time, and the city is sad at his passing.

Warsaw City Council President Joe Thallemer said he served on the plan commission when Silveus was a city councilman.

"Mac was concerned in how his decisions would impact the community and looked at both sides of issues," Thallemer said.
