SYRACUSE – Forest A. “Bud” Smith Jr., 87, of Syracuse, passed away April 29, 2011, in Goshen General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Fort Wayne, to Forest A. and Leona Clara Hildebrand Smith. On Feb. 15, 1947, he married Mary Lou Stiver, who died in 2007.
He moved to the Syracuse area from Fort Wayne in 1938. A World War II U.S. Navy veteran, he belonged to the Syracuse American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He retired from Aluminum Conversion Inc. in 1985. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse. He was a volunteer Red Coat at Goshen General Hospital. He was the first director for the Syracuse Youth Center from 1964-68. It was in 1968 that he was named “Top Pop” by WOWO, recognized as father of the year. Also in 1968, he was named Wawasee Flotilla commodore.
Surviving are a son, Michael (and spouse Pam) Smith, Millersburg; two granddaughters, Amanda Becker, Mishawaka, and Anne (and spouse Scott) Richey, Syracuse; six great-grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Don Underwood, Ligonier. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Donald; and two sisters, Vera Jean Rosenogle and Vella Baumbaugh.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eastlund Funeral Home, 7458 E. CR 1000N, Syracuse. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery with full military honors.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
