Raiders Win NLC Girls Track Meet

By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Writer

MIDDLEBURY - Although Northridge won Tuesday's NLC girls track meet, the surprise of the night came when NorthWood gave the Raiders a run for their money and placed second, just 13 points away from the victory.

"Our kids came our here and performed tonight," said NorthWood coach Kirt Hunsberger. "We wanted to come in and try to stay ahead of Concord because we thought the race would be between Warsaw and Northridge for first. We have never scored 100 points in an NLC meet, and we certainly did not expect it tonight."

Warsaw and Wawasee placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

"I thought we would do a pinch better," said Warsaw coach Paul Boyd. "It wasn't a spectacular performance, but we are a young team. Tonight our youth showed in a few areas, but what's nice about that is it's fixable."

"We performed very well tonight," said Wawasee coach Kevin Gilbert. "We had a lot of season bests. We have had kind of a rough year, and this really helped us out."

Northridge jumped out to an early lead as the Raiders won the 3,200-meter relay and the discus, but NorthWood came within four points as Grace Bonewitz won the 100 hurdles. After the long jump competition, NorthWood cut the Raider lead to three, 32-29, and Wawasee was only 10 behind with 22 points after five events.

After Northridge placed first and second in the 1,600 and first in the 400 relay, the Raiders had built their lead to 24 points. Warsaw's Chelsea Boyd placed first in the 400, and NorthWood's Katie Chamberlin and Natalie Loucks placed third and fourth respectively to cut into the Northridge lead.

Natalie Nunemaker hurled the shot put 35-11 1/2 to earn first place in the event, and teammate Carol Duncan threw 35-4 1/2 to place second and earn her season best. That strong finish in the shot put catapulted the Panthers to within five points of Northridge.

When the Northridge squad failed to place in the 300 low hurdles, NorthWood took a 70-69 lead.

Next, Summer Boyd earned Warsaw's second first-place finish of the night in the 800, and helped the Tigers take a 49-42 lead over Wawasee, but Northridge restored a 76-70 lead over NorthWood to slide back into first place overall after 11 events.

Warsaw's lead over Wawasee was short-lived, however, as Staci Weisser placed first in the high jump for the Warriors with a jump of 5-4 to give Wawasee 52 points to Warsaw's 49. NorthWood's Shelly Stichter placed second in the high jump, while teammate Duncan placed third to restore the Panthers' overall lead, 84-79.

That would be NorthWood's last lead of the night as Northridge placed high in the last three races to solidify its victory.

Although NorthWood's Cort Sandy placed first in the 3,200, the Panthers were not able to overcome the Raiders in the end and placed second in the meet with 100 points.

Warsaw finished the meet strong with the 1,600 relay team of Brittany Raber, Liz Wiggins, Chelsea Boyd and Summer Boyd finishing first and shattering their previous best time by four seconds.

"It was nice to finish on a high note," said Paul Boyd. "We had our best time of the season, so it was kind of cool."

Warsaw, NorthWood and Wawasee will meet again next Tuesday in Warsaw at the sectional.

"Next week will be interesting with the sectional at home," said Paul Boyd. "We will work on fixing some things, and I think we'll be more relaxed."
