AKRON - Flossie B. Lance, 102, 11 days short of her 103 birthday, formerly of the Wabash and Roann areas, died at 5:40 a.m. Sept. 7, 2009, in Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester, where she resided.

She was born Sept. 18, 1906, in Miami County, to Truman and Stella Shoemaker Hartzler. On June 30, 1930, she married Arvol Lance, who died Aug. 24, 1942.

She retired from General Tire, Wabash, in the 1960s, where she had worked for more than 20 years as well as many other jobs to support her family due to losing her husband early in life. She graduated from Gilead High School. She was a member of Olive Branch Church of God for many years and attended Wabash First Church of God, where she was involved in the Women's Missionary Society. She was a wonderful seamstress, a great cook and loved to travel with her family after retirement. She was a very family oriented person and cared deeply about other people. She tried hard to keep her family together. She was the oldest living resident of Peabody Retirement Community.

Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Cook, Indianapolis, and Beverly (and spouse Dale) Copeland, Akron; three sons, Don (and spouse Sue) Lance, Warsaw, and Jack (and spouse Nancy) Lance and Ivan (and spouse Della) Lance, all of North Manchester; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six sisters, Clara Hartzler, Nettie Miller, Nellie Manor, Mabelle Ramsey, Mary Polk and Mildred Thompson; and five brothers, Floyd, Orville "Pete," Russell "Bob," Lester "Joe" and Forrest "Bud."

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Pastor Terry Canfield officiating. Burial will be in Enterprize Cemetery, Roann.

Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
