By Staff Report-
Derick Cordero, 32, Orlando, Fla., was taken into custody without incident Thursday afternoon at his residence by members of the Orange County Sheriff's Dept. SWAT Team and is currently being held on a preliminarily charge of felony possession of cannabis with intent to sell or deliver.
Officers from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department and several Florida law enforcement agencies raided Cordero’s home after completing an investigation that originated in Warsaw.
KCSD initially became involved with the case when a Nappanee woman came to the sheriff's department to report a scam. She had been contacted by Cordero, who allegedly persuaded her into paying more than $4,000 in fraudulent closing fees for a time-share property located in Kissimmee, Fla.
KCSD detectives were able to track her payment to a mailbox in Beverly Hills, Calif. The payment was then forward to Orlando, where subpoenaed records revealed Cordero's signature on the cashed check.
The Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office and sheriff's department subsequently contacted the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and initiated surveillance on Cordero's residence when they acquired a search warrant Wednesday. Prior to executing the search warrant, undercover officers observed Cordero conduct a drug transaction at his residence.
Approximately 30 Florida officers, as well as KCSD Det. Sgt. J.D. Ayres, entered Cordero’s home, locating approximately $30,000 in pre-packaged marijuana ready for distribution. The Orange County Sheriff's Office Cyber Crimes Unit also secured various documents, computers and cellular devices owned by Cordero for further analysis of other potential victims.
Cordero currently has an active felony warrant for theft or fraud with a $10,000 bond, issued from Kosciusko County related to Ayres’ investigation.
Cordero is still in custody in Florida on his local drug-related charges.[[In-content Ad]]
