Flooding Continues, Families Displaced

According to Ed Rock, Emergency Management director, 32 roads are closed and 124 more are dealing with high water.
"The rivers aren't expected to crest until Saturday or Sunday," said Rock. "We're going to be dealing with (flooding) for a while."[[In-content Ad]]Temperatures dropped Wednesday and rain turned into freezing rain, which eventually turned into snow.
Both Warsaw Police and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department are dealing with vehicles hitting ice and going off the road.
Drivers are reminded to use caution while driving and avoid areas of flooding.
The Kosciusko County Highway Department is dealing with the theft and vandalism of "High Water" and "Road Closed" signs.
"Yesterday, we were setting up signs and within two hours they were stolen," said Highway Department Superintendent Dennis Pletcher. "We've also had people take signs and stick them in different places."
Pletcher said he was looking into getting Global Positioning System tracking chips to put in road signs.
Pletcher stated the highway department spends more than $50,000 a year in replacing old signs as well as vandalized and stolen signs.
"If it's more cost effective to use those GPS chips, that may be the way we go," said Pletcher.
The American Red Cross is currently providing a place to stay for two families displaced by the floods.
"We're getting people that are coming in from Ridinger Lake and Sellers Lake," said American Red Cross Kosciusko County Chapter Executive Director Larry Peppel. "We expect more people to come in as other lakes flood."
Those wishing to provide support to the American Red Cross are asked to donate to the National Disaster Relief Fund.
Peppel also pointed to donations made by businesses from around the county.
Families in Wabash County also have been displaced.
Due to flooding of the Eel River in North Manchester, East Side Trailer Court, South Mill Street, has been closed by its owners.
Around 32 people in 14 residences were voluntarily evacuated Wednesday.
Anyone in need of shelter or who has other flooding-related needs should contact the North Manchester Police Department at 260-982-8555.
