Flooded

We live in the Lakewood Hills addition on the west side of Center Lake. On Jan. 2, we came home from Elgin, Ill., to find Miner Road under approximately 1 foot of water - nothing too difficult.

With our massive snow now melting and much rain, Thursday brought more flooding so the city quickly opened up a detour around the Center Lake dam and out onto Lake Street. We drove over it and thought nothing of the accumulating water at the end of our driveway. We were safe and comfortable and were kind of pleased using the detour and driving around to see how other lakes were doing. We complacently drove into our garage, even though we did have to go through quite a bit of water at the driveway base. Little did we know that it would not be until Jan. 28 that we could get a car out. Today, we can get both cars in and out. Thank you!

We went from accepting kind offers of rides while walking out to the addition entrance, to getting a rental car, to using one of our cars (Korky Koors kindly drove one out of our garage and over the frozen lawns to a place we could drive it ourselves), to being able to park that car under the trees south of our deck off Miner Road (with age and heart conditions as factors, the walk was tough for us).

We have been so pampered ... going from warm house into warm cars with automatic garage openers.

As soon as they could, the city made the above detour, sandbagged the near waterfall created by the amazing fact that Tippecanoe River was spilling into Center Lake, worked long and hard at breaking up ice on Miner Road, and then little by little on Baythorne Drive. Since we are the last ones on that cul de sac, it wasn't until yesterday and today that we see hope for things to get back to normal.

We are grateful for all the effort put into making a difficult situation workable. We commend the city officials and the patient and effective workers.

We are also very grateful for the strong and effective advocacy of Neal Carlson, Glen Matthews and others from the neighborhood and condo association.
