NORTH MANCHESTER - After interviewing three candidates last week, the Manchester School Board announced its choice to fill a vacant seat on the panel.

Steve Flack was the board's unanimous choice to fill the seat left open by Brad Perrott's resignation in May. Flack will finish Perrott's term, which lasts three more years.

"I appreciate what you have done, and the community appreciates what you have done," said board president Sally Krouse as she addressed all three candidates. "You all brought special skills and talents."

After the meeting, Flack explained why he wanted to be a member of the school board.

"I have three kids coming up (in the system), and I know the board has had some tough times and has had to make a lot of tough decisions," Flack said. "I want to help be part of the solution."

Flack and his wife Lisa have three children: Austin, 13; Kayla, 10; and Derek, 7. The Flack family lives on CR 800N on the south edge of Pleasant Township.

After appointing Flack, who will begin his duties at the next meeting July 5, the board discussed bids for commercial insurance.

Three companies submitted bids for commercial insurance and worker's compensation coverage to Business Manager Steve Shumaker.

"Only three companies provide service to schools in Indiana," said Shumaker. Bids were received from Allen Agency, Beauchamp-McSpadden Agency and Wetzel Agency. Allen Agency has been the provider for Manchester Community Schools for several years, and it was the only agency that met all bid specifications.

In the end after much discussion, Shumaker told the board his recommendation was to renew with Allen Agency for the insurance coverage.

The board approved a motion to use Allen Agency and Indiana Insurance with a 4-1 vote. Thom Frantz opposed the motion.

In other business, the board:

• Heard and approved school improvement plans from Laketon School, Manchester Elementary School and Manchester Junior/Senior High School. All three schools strive to improve writing skills in students and improve cultural competency by recognizing and accepting differences in families and students. Respect for others is another common goal in the three schools. The plans will now be submitted to the state for approval.

• Approved the acceptance of a donation from the Laketon American Legion Auxiliary of a CD, "For Which It Stands," and $30 to purchase the new "Harry Potter" book.

• Approved a request for the use of Manchester High School parking lot for a Human Powered Race America bike race Aug. 6-7.

• Accepted the resignations of Shelly Walgamuth, French teacher at Manchester High School; Esta Gullet, cook at Manchester Elementary School; and Deanna Bagley and Shirley Hunter, cooks at Laketon Elementary School.

• Approved the hiring of Kim Robison as instructional assistant for driver's education bookwork at MHS.

• Approved a request to apply for Title I Grants. This year, the school plans to receive $153,610 to help children who are under poverty level at the elementary school level.

• Heard that the tennis courts at the high school have been finished and will officially be opened today at 5 p.m.
