Monday night, the school board recognized the five retirees from the corporation.
Tippecanoe Valley Middle School Principal Earl Richter spoke about Rickey Phillips and Deb Whistler.
Phillips spent 39 years with Valley, Richter said. He battled health issues toward the end, including a stroke during spring break and another stroke during rehab. He’s been in Indianapolis since.
Richter said Phillips, originally from Delphi, started at LaPorte before coming to Valley. The father of three, he ran the technology lab at the middle school since it was opened. He taught driver’s education and helped with the adult education program. Richter said it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know Phillips.
“We do appreciate what he has done,” Richter said.
Whistler earned her bachelor’s degree from Manchester College and master’s degree from Ball State University. The mother of three, she is retiring with 32 years of experience, the last 23 at Valley.
Richter said Whistler taught consumer science at Akron, then moved to the middle school where she taught language arts. Before coming to Valley, she taught a year at Pioneer, a year at Whitko and seven years at North Miami.
Retiring from the high school this year were guidance counselor Jo Gamble and Doug Makula.
The school board approved Gamble’s retirement Monday night. In her retirement letter, Gamble wrote that she is retiring this year because of health reasons.
“It has been my honor to work with the students and teachers at Tippecanoe Valley High School, making this a very painful decision,” she wrote.
Linda Tucker was recognized by Superintendent Brett Boggs for her 27 years of service to Valley.
She was the secretary of Burket Elementary School for 12 years, five years at TVMS and back to Burket for another 10 years.
Tucker is a 1963 graduate of Akron High School and a 1965 graduate of International Business College where she attended executive secretarial school. In addition to her years with Valley, Tucker also was employed for five years in insurance offices in Fort Wayne and Mentone.
The mother of three sons and five grandchildren, Tucker plans to spend more time with her family while taking care of her garden.
“We want to thank Linda for her years of service,” said Boggs.
Boggs also thanked Tippecanoe Valley High School Principal Kirk Doehrmann, Assistant Principal Mike Schmidt, senior class sponsors and the seniors for an “excellent” graduation.
The school board approved the textbook rental fees and the school lunch prices for the 2011-12 school year.
For Akron and Mentone elementary schools, fees for textbooks for kindergarten will be $88, up $8 from 2010-11 school year; $126 for first grade, up $10 from last year; $133 for second grade, down $2; $122 for third grade, up $2; $111 for fourth grade, up $6; and $115 for fifth grade, up $4.
