First time's a charm for Warsaw's Geiger
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
First-time pageant entrant Brooke Marie Geiger was named 1998 Miss Kosciusko County Fair Queen Friday night.
Geiger, 18, said that the honor will require some changes in her summer plans, but she's looking forward to it.
"(The pageant) was a really fun experience," Geiger said. "I've never done anything like this before."
A 1998 graduate of Warsaw Community High School, Geiger is the daughter of DeLynn and Debbie Geiger of Warsaw. She plans to attend Bethel College and major in vocal performance.
As fair queen, Geiger was awarded a $1,000 scholarship, an engraved cut glass pitcher from Warsaw Cut Glass, a portrait from Cox Studio, a tiara, crown pin and sash, flowers, and a queen T-shirt from Reneker's. She received her crown from 1997 Fair Queen Jamie Teel, who shared the microphone at the Shrine Building throughout the night with master of ceremonies Charlie Adams, WSBT News 22 sports director.
Geiger's first official duty took place Saturday when she appeared in the BalloonFest parade.
She will represent Kosciusko County in the 1998 Indiana State Fair Pageant Aug. 22-23.
Geiger took the local crown at the culmination of the competition among 13 young ladies. The judging comprised interviews (50 percent), sportswear competition (20 percent) and evening gown competition (30 percent).
Each young lady was also required to answer a final question. Geiger responded to: "How would a dictionary define you?" with "A leader ... outgoing, knows how to have a lot of fun, gives 110 percent and is a good friend." Each contestant chose a different question from a basket; the questions were not known to the ladies in advance.
Friday's pageant was doubly exciting for the first runner-up, who also captured the Miss Congeniality title.
Until Geiger was announced as queen, 20-year-old Andrea Marie King held the spotlight alone at the front of the stage, donning both the "Miss Congeniality" and "First Runner-Up" sashes.
For winning the first runner-up title, King receives a $500 scholarship, an engraved cut glass bowl, a sash, flowers and a first runner-up T-shirt. She also, as Miss Congeniality, wins a $200 scholarship, an engraved cut glass bud vase, a sash, flowers and a Miss Congeniality T-shirt.
King, the daughter of Barry and Ruth Ann King of Warsaw, is a 1996 graduate of Warsaw Community High School and will be a junior at Cedarville College, where she is majoring in biology.
King's final question was: "If you could take me (Charlie Adams) on a one-day trip around Kosciusko County, where would we go?" King told Adams that his tour would start with Central Park and the gardens surrounding it, then on to county fair and a ride on the ferris wheel and conclude with watching the sunset over one of the county's many lakes.
If, for any reason, Geiger is unable to fulfill the duties of the fair queen, King would take her place.
Geiger will preside over the 1998 Kosciusko County 4-H and Community Fair and participate in many of the events July 14 through 19. The queen contest is sponsored by the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair Association. [[In-content Ad]]
